Dear Supporter of Nantucket STAR,

Nantucket STAR began in 2003 and has grown from 1 program of 6 students, to serving 50+ students and families a year. This is a benefit to our community that has also  grown up and diversified in need and challenges. Each year as we have grown, we have given back to our community, raised children and given them strength while also being supported by many donors, Sponsors and individuals.

As an active teacher of programs, I have had the honor and privilege of watching children and families grow from timid beginnings to confident participants in recreational fun with us and then on their own. The tools given by STAR leaders to parents and students are to help them become more independent and self-sufficient in participation, be it small or large group activities.

We, as a board, rose to the challenge of the health and community restrictions by thinking outside the box and creating a Covid-19 Response Plan. We knew many of our families were isolated and showing regression and sadness from lack of stimulation. After surveying staff and families, we created “STAR Adventure Pods” and began. Family responses were of thanks and gratitude for providing activities and friendships to their children. This was the greatest gift STAR leaders could receive.

This year due to closure of CV-19, we were unable to host our annual event that sustains and provides the financial security to continue our work. We are gravely concerned that our small non-profit will become a victim of this time of many closures. Each program we provide has costs for staffing, insurance, processing, and now PPE for all. Without our event, we are seeing the impact and we may not be able to sustain our finances and need to make difficult decisions.

Before we make those decisions, we are asking for support. This is different for us, and uncomfortable, but we are plainly just asking.

We are a non-profit with a tax ID to help those that can give. And if you are able to give, please know, your impact will support this community in boundless ways. The mental health and physical health of our youth is critical, and we are concerned if we fade away, so will many of our families and friends that rely on STAR.

Hello STAR Families and Friends,

We are excited to be able to offer some summer programming. It will definitely not look the same, but the STAR Team has put together some fun activities that will get our STAR kiddos  “movin and groovin” while adhering to the protocols set forward by our local and state governments. Thank you so much for your patience and we are all super happy to be able to connect with all of you!!!

Best,

The STAR Team

Let’s Zoom!(6)

It is with great pleasure that the Board of Directors at Nantucket S.T.A.R. would like to welcome Maggie Lengyel as our new Director of Programming and Operations. Maggie comes to S.T.A.R. with a wealth of experience and a passion for families and our Nantucket community. Maggie is looking forward to getting to know all of our S.T.A.R. families and is excited to begin. Please take a moment to read Maggie’s Bio below.

Hi, my name is Maggie Lengyel and I will be starting as the new Director of Operations and Program Development on April 1st. My husband Thomas and I moved to Nantucket in November of 2015. Thomas is the Senior Pastor at Summer Street Church and volunteers with Elder Services and serves on the Interfaith Council. Our daughter Sparrow was born in 2017. She’s teaches us new things every day and keeps us active! Together with our 11-year-old white shepherd, Dusty, we enjoy Nantucket’s walking trails and kayaking in the creeks.

Before we moved to the island, Tina Steadman introduced us to the amazing work S.T.A.R. was doing in the Nantucket community. Today I am humbled by the opportunity to serve in my new role to support S.T.A.R.’s mission- inviting every child to enjoy the sports and recreation activities this island has to offer. I hope to put my passion for nonprofits and serving this community to work; having fun, being active, listening to your concerns and suggestions, and imagining creative solutions to benefit every person in our community.

I can’t wait to meet you all in the coming months to learn more about your S.T.A.R. stories. With the support of the Board of Directors and staff, I look forward to coming alongside S.T.A.R.’s children and families to play, learn, and grow together.

Until then, be well and reach out to this community for support.

Warm regards,

Maggie Lengyel

Dear Families,

Out of an abundance of caution and the state’s recommendation regarding Covid-19, Nantucket STAR and its Board of Directors  have  decided to cancel all programming until April 10th. Given that many of STAR’s participants are immunocompromised we feel it is in everyone’s best interest to take a break from programming. Nantucket STAR will issue a full credit to go towards a future STAR program of choice for those who have already paid for the Cross Fit program. We are planning to resume programming on April 11th with our “Learn to Swim” classes and will keep everyone informed of any changes.
As of now our dinner fundraiser at Dune Restaurant on March 22nd has been postponed until the fall.
We will miss all of you! Stay healthy!
Best,
Tina
Be Good to Each Other!!!!

Hi STAR Families and Friends,

I know most of you are eagerly anticipating February break and while we are looking forward to some time off, our spring programming will begin the first week in March. We will be offering our “Learn To Swim” classes along with Cross Fit at Nantucket Cycling Center. Be on the look out for a respite night early in March and for more information regarding our fundraiser dinner at Dune Restaurant on Sunday, March 22nd for our summer camp STAR Troopers and our annual Gala event at The Chicken Box on Saturday, May 9th. Save the Date!

We have had so much fun at STAR Chopped this winter. A huge thank you to the ReMain Fund and the Nantucket Culinary Center for helping to make this incredible program possible! We have had 10 families participating in our Saturday Morning Play Group with STAR this winter and appreciate our partnership with Nantucket Community School in this vital program.

More good news from Nantucket STAR coming your way in March!

Best,

Tina

Happy New Year !

Happy Thanksgiving! It’s that time of year when I reflect on all that we have to be thankful for at Nantucket S.T.A.R.. So here is the Top 10!

  1.  Our Students and their Families- they make our lives that much fuller!
  2. Our Staff- who never cease to amaze me!
  3. Our Volunteers- who never cease to amaze me!
  4. Our Board of Director- who do an excellent job at “keeping the main thing the main thing”!
  5. Our Community Partners- who partner with us and enable STAR to offer some amazing programs!
  6. Our Sponsors-  they keep us going !
  7. Our Grant Donors- they keep us going!
  8. Our Donors- they keep us going!
  9. Our Nantucket Community- for all the love and support we feel from you!
  10. Nantucket STAR- the last 10 years have been some of the most rewarding and wonderful years! I am forever grateful!

“Our camp site is Trotter’s Lane , where we go to avoid the rain. We are the mighty STAR Troopers, not big fat party poopers. We like to have lots of fun while we play out in the sun. We swim and play every single day, and we feed the Lamas hay. We are the amazing Jedi, don’t be afraid to ask us why. We love our STAR friends, and we don’t want camp to end.”       STAR Troopers Jedi 2019

This is the poem our older group , The Jedi, wrote the last day of camp in August. What an amazing week was had by all as we traipsed all over our beautiful island making memories! This would not be possible if not for the grant support of The Nantucket Fund, The Nantucket Golf Club Foundation and Dune Restaurant. Thank you to our amazing and talented staff (see pictures below). Many of these women and lone man, worked other jobs during the week only to turn around the Monday after camp to start back at school. They are the dream team! Lastly, thank you to our families for trusting us with your children. They bring us incredible joy and our lives are the better for having them as part of our STAR community!

Happy Fall!!!!

PS: It was virtually impossible to get all campers and staff to  be looking at the camera at the same time. With that said ,the camper photo captures the heart of STAR perfectly…..

Nantucket S.T.A.R. would like to thank the Pickle Ball Club of Nantucket and their recent donation from their August Pickle Ball Tournament. Loads of fun was had by all and we are thankful for their generosity and support.  Thank you for Joining Hands To Make A Difference!
